Consensus on Disability and Inclusion in the Caribbean

Educating and sensitizing Caribbean communities can improve awareness of people living with disabilities.

Promoting accessibility and awareness in public spaces, and making public transportation and education accessible, provide accommodations, sign language interpreters, and braille materials, encourage inclusive hiring practices, and media representation of people living with disabilities can improve inclusiveness and acceptance within the caribbean.

Partnering with disability organizations and hosting events can raise awareness, fostering a culture of acceptance and inclusion for people living with disabilities. For people living with disabilities, community inclusion means equal access, opportunities and respect. This involves removing barriers, promoting awareness and fostering an environment where everyone can participate and contribute equally. Involving people living with disabilities in decision making and community activities will also promote a culture of acceptance, respect and empathy.

It is the responsibility of governments to ensure accessibility, equality, and inclusivity. They should provide accommodations, education, equal employment opportunities, healthcare and social services. Governments must also enforce disability rights, promote awareness and consult with disability organizations creating supportive environments.

Government negligence of people living with disabilities includes inadequate accessibility, poor educational system, and equal employment opportunities, insufficient healthcare, and failure to enforce disability rights laws/acts. Their deficiencies result in social isolation, poverty, and limited access to essential services.

Expressing gratitude for inclusive policies and initiatives. We must acknowledge the  Caribbean countries that have disability rights acts. They are Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Barbados. Other countries have policies and laws promoting accessibility and inclusivity.
